Most countertop pizza ovens stop at 12 inches, which is fine for one person but tight for a family pizza. The BIG HORN OUTDOORS GP9022PRC is built for pizzas up to 14 inches, and pairs that larger floor with PID temperature control and six presets. It suits a kitchen cook who wants to bake sharing-size pizzas indoors and likes the idea of repeatable heat from one bake to the next.

Our take

Upper and lower heat with PID control

BIG HORN lists 2,200 W split between upper and lower heating elements, so the toppings and the base each get their own heat source. Separate controls for top and bottom let you push the base harder for a crisp crust or hold back the top for delicate toppings.

PID control is a type of thermostat that adjusts power in small steps rather than switching fully on and off. The maker says this keeps temperature steadier and cuts the wait between batches. The temperature range is given as 220 to 850°F, roughly 105 to 455°C.

Six programmes for different styles

The presets are Manual, Wood Fired, Frozen, New York, Thin Crispy and Deep Dish. Deep Dish is unusual on a compact oven and suggests the lower heat settings are usable for thicker bakes, not only fast Neapolitan style pizza.

Size, contents and cleaning

The specifications give 51.7 cm deep, 47.9 cm wide and 26.5 cm high, with a weight of 13.4 kg. It is low enough for most worktops beneath wall units, but heavy enough that you will probably want to leave it out rather than lift it into a cupboard after every use.

In the box are a 14 inch heat-conducting stone, an insulated door and a pizza peel. The stone is removable, which the listing says makes routine cleaning easier, and a removable cover is mentioned too. No warranty period is stated.

Where it sits among indoor ovens

The Sage Smart Oven Pizzaiolo has Element iQ heating and a stated 400°C in 2 minutes, but it is far heavier at 22.4 kg and built around a 30 cm pizza. The Kenwood My Pizzeria is the light option at 4.7 kg with a 30 cm stone. The BIG HORN is the one to choose for size.

Verdict

Choose the BIG HORN OUTDOORS 14 inch electric oven if you want family-size pizzas indoors, steady PID heat and a Deep Dish preset alongside the usual styles. It is less suited to small kitchens where the oven has to be packed away. There, the Kenwood My Pizzeria is easier to live with, and the Sage Smart Oven Pizzaiolo offers more refined heating.
