Gozney makes two ovens aimed at buyers who want something smaller than its Arc and Dome. The Roccbox is the original: a compact, dense oven with thick insulation and a soft-touch jacket. The Tread came later and is pitched at travel and the outdoors, with a design meant to pack down and move easily. Both bake pizza fast once hot. This comparison looks at weight, legs, opening and insulation, the points that decide which suits you. Gozney updates its ovens, so confirm current weights and sizes on its spec pages.

Two ovens, two jobs

The Roccbox has been around for years and built Gozney's reputation. It is small on the outside but heavy for its size, because so much of it is insulation. That makes it steady in wind and good at holding heat between pizzas. It has legs that fold away and a detachable gas burner, and Gozney sells a wood burner attachment for those who want to cook with fire.

The Tread is aimed at people who want to take a Gozney oven to the campsite, the beach or a friend's garden. Gozney designed it to be lighter and easier to carry, with folding legs and accessories that turn it into a small outdoor kitchen. It is gas only.

Side by side

The comparison below covers the general design of each oven. We have left out exact weights and burner figures because they differ by version and market; Gozney's spec pages list them.

Weight and the legs

Weight is where the two split. The Roccbox's insulation is great for heat but makes it a two hand lift from the car to the table. The Tread is built to cut that weight so a single person can carry it more easily. If you will move the oven every week, that difference adds up.

Both ovens stand on folding legs, so they work on a sturdy table. Check the table can take the weight and heat, keep the front clear of anything that can burn and level the oven before lighting. Our pizza oven tables and stands article has tips on safe surfaces.

Opening, insulation and baking

Both ovens have a relatively low opening, which keeps heat in and helps the top of the pizza cook. A low mouth also means you need a neat launch. A thin metal peel helps, and a small turning peel makes rotation easier. See how to use a turning peel.

The Roccbox's insulation helps the stone recover between pizzas, so it is better for feeding a group back to back. A lighter oven usually needs a slightly longer pause between bakes. If you cook two or three pizzas for a couple of people, you will hardly notice. If you host often, the Roccbox has the edge. Either way, check the stone with an infrared thermometer before each launch.

Which to choose

Choose the Roccbox if the oven will live on the patio most of the time, you want a cooler outer shell, or you like the option of a wood burner. Choose the Tread if travel is the main point and you want Gozney build in a form that is easier to pack and carry.

Note:Gas pizza ovens are for outdoor use only. Never use one indoors, in a tent, awning, caravan or garage. Before each use check the hose and regulator and do a soapy-water leak test on the joints. Keep the bottle upright, outdoors and away from heat, and turn the gas off at the bottle when you finish. Follow the manual for your model. If you suspect a gas leak, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999, and use a Gas Safe registered engineer for any fixed gas work.
