Our verdict
Stay with the Roccbox if 12 inch pizzas, a compact footprint and the wood burner option suit you. Move up to the Arc, or the Arc XL, if you want larger pizzas and more room to turn them. Confirm exact sizes on gozney.com.
The Roccbox is many people's first Gozney. After a season or two, some owners start wondering about the Arc, which takes larger pizzas and has a different burner layout. This comparison covers the points that decide whether the upgrade is worth it: maximum pizza size, where the flame comes from, how you control heat and how much table space each needs. Gozney has sold more than one Arc version, including the larger Arc XL, so check its spec pages for the exact model you are looking at.
Size is the main reason to move up
The Roccbox bakes pizzas of around 12 inches. That is plenty for one or two people and the classic Neapolitan size, but the opening and floor leave little spare room. The Arc is built for larger pizzas, and the Arc XL larger again, which gives more space to launch and turn without the crust drifting into the flame.
A small jump in diameter makes a big difference to area. A 12 inch pizza has about 113 sq in of surface, a 14 inch about 154 sq in and a 16 inch about 201 sq in. Try the pizza size comparer to see what that means for your household.
Side by side
The table compares the general layout. We have not listed weights, burner output or exact dimensions, which vary by version; Gozney's spec pages give them.
| Point | Roccbox | Arc |
|---|---|---|
| Pizza size | Around 12 inch | Larger, with an XL version for bigger still |
| Burner position | Detachable gas burner, flame rolls over the dome | Burner along the side, flame across the dome |
| Fuel | Gas, optional wood burner | Gas |

| Footprint | Compact | Larger, needs more table space |
| Best for | Smaller households, travel | Bigger pizzas, regular hosting |
Burner layout and how the pizza bakes
Both ovens bake by sending flame across the dome so heat comes down onto the top of the pizza while the stone cooks the base. With the flame coming from one part of the oven, the crust nearest it cooks fastest, so you turn the pizza regularly. That is normal for most portable ovens.
The Arc's extra width gives more room between the pizza and the flame, which makes turning easier and reduces the chance of scorching one edge. If you often see a burnt edge on one side and a pale edge on the other in your Roccbox, the bigger floor helps. Our pizza burnt on the bottom, raw on top fix covers the heat balance in any oven.
Temperature control and footprint
Both ovens use a gas dial, so you can turn the flame down once the stone is hot to stop the base burning. Gozney describes the Arc as designed with finer control in mind; check its spec page for whether a built-in thermometer is included on your version. An infrared thermometer on the stone is still the most reliable guide in any oven.
Think about space. The Roccbox fits a small table or a corner of a patio. The Arc needs a larger, sturdy, heat-resistant surface and more clearance. Measure before you buy, and see our pizza oven tables and stands article for safe set-ups.
Note:Gas pizza ovens are for outdoor use only. Never use one indoors, in a tent, awning, caravan or garage. Before each use check the hose and regulator and do a soapy-water leak test on the joints. Keep the bottle upright, outdoors and away from heat, and turn the gas off at the bottle when you finish. Follow the manual for your model. If you suspect a gas leak, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999, and use a Gas Safe registered engineer for any fixed gas work.
Should you upgrade?
Keep the Roccbox if you are happy with 12 inch pizzas, value its cooler jacket and like the option of the wood burner. It remains a very capable oven.
Move to the Arc if you want larger pizzas, more room to turn or you regularly cook for a group. If you are unsure about size, our 12 inch vs 16 inch pizza oven comparison helps. For other gas options at both sizes, see the best gas pizza ovens and the best 12 inch pizza ovens.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Gozney Arc Lite? Gozney has sold variants within the Arc family. Names and features change between markets and years, so check gozney.com for the current line-up and what each version includes.
Can the Arc burn wood? The Arc is a gas oven. If cooking with wood matters, the Roccbox with its wood burner attachment, or the larger Dome, are Gozney's wood options.
Is the Arc much bigger than the Roccbox? Yes. It takes larger pizzas and needs more table space. The Arc XL is bigger again.
Do I need a bigger peel for the Arc? If you bake larger pizzas, yes. A peel slightly wider than your pizza makes launching easier. See pizza peel sizes explained.
